Get Kidz Moving with Free Activity Ideas and Fitness Resources

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Ever wondered exactly how to keep your children active, fit and healthy? Kidzmove.com, with the help of children’s favourite superhero, Sportacus, aims to reverse a trend which has seen almost 1 in 5 children classed as obese or overweight.

KidzMove.com is for anyone who wants to help children move more, stay physically active and have fun. The website has free videos and ideas for teachers, parents, carers, youth workers and sports volunteers to use to help them keep children entertained and physically fit.

Featuring easy-to-understand lessons covering topics like warm ups, cool downs and stretching, weight-training for children, and ideas for active party games, KidzMove.com is the ideal resource for anyone with a responsibility for a child’s health.

Fiona McAuslan is a busy working mum with. She used KidzMove.com to get ideas and inspiration to keep her 20 month old son active during the Christmas holidays:

“We limit Marlowe’s television viewing to half an hour wind down time before bed which works well in theory but means that that during the day there are always plenty of hours that need filling up with activities! He’s a very active little toddler, constantly on the move and always ready to jump, clamber and climb on every available surface and I wanted to make sure that he had as much to do inside during cold spells as outside – without wrecking the furniture.

“KidzMove.com has been a brilliant source of games and activities that we can play together that keep him active and moving – and definitely entertained.”

KidzMove.Com is brought to you by two of the biggest names in children’s health: LazyTown and FitPro.

LazyTown is the only kids brand dedicated to motivating kids to lead a healthier lifestyle. Says Magnus Scheving, the show’s creator and star, “It’s my belief that healthy, active children under seven grow up to be healthy, active adults. That’s why I’ve joined forces with FitPro to help create KidzMove.com and provide free access to everything anyone needs who is seriously interested in helping young children be more physically active.”

FitPro is the largest association of fitness professional in the world, and has decades of experience creating fun and engaging programmes that keep children moving. Andy Jackson, global commercial director of FitPro says: “With KidzMove.com we want to share our passion for helping children have fun and healthy lives. Midnight in the Naked City released 28th November from Pete Thomas

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Go for a naughty night out of superb tunes, as cool

as the midnight air on your bare skin, with one of

our most unsung jazz-blues talents

…………………………………………………………………………………

World class saxophonist, Pete Thomas recalls the sexy, sleazy world of 1940s basement bars and notorious speakeasies on his new album ‘Midnight in the Naked City’ – released Nov 28th through Proper Distribution

Thomas harnesses the rebellious spirit the saxophone was once synonymous with, to evoke the glory days of bluesy jazz playing over 13 tracks. The music snakes its way into your consciousness with a heady mix of romanticism, sensuality and lustiness as Thomas takes you on night out you won’t forget.

Well respected as a jazz musician, Pete Thomas has featured with the Fats Domino band, Thad Jones Orchestra, Loose Tubes, Slim Gaillard, Jimmy Witherspoon, Jon Hendricks and Laverne Baker. As a pop and rock sideman he has recorded with Joe Jackson, Richard Thompson, REM and Elton John to name but a few. More info: www.petethomas.co.ukSays Pete,  “Without trying to be deliberately “retro” I still wanted to get the saxophone back to its jazz and blues roots as a somewhat “naughty” instrument. My main aim with the saxophone has always been to delve deeply into its sound. I noticed that the great players I am inspired by don’t have to play 1000 notes a minute, but can express everything in just a handful of notes. I aspire to using as wide a palette of sound colours as possible, even find some as yet undiscovered, rather than trying to impress with a fast fingering technique or restrict myself to any one recognisable style.”

On this album Pete is accompanied by some great musicians including Richard Thompson, Steve Rose, Malcolm Creese, Roy Dodds, Robin Bibi and Geraint Watkins.

Revenue from this album is being donated to charity. Since the release of his last album, Mr Lucky, Pete has raised over £50,000 from sales of CDs, sheet music and his own design of saxophone mouthpieces, for various charities including APEC, LeukemiaBusters, and the Red Cross. Currently all fundraising is helping disabled musicians via Wall of Sounds, a collaboration between Manchester based club Band on the Wall and Brighter Sounds.

For Musicians:

Coinciding with the release is a special musicians pack which includes sheet music and backing tracks. Available from: www.petethomas.co.uk/midnight

…………………………………………………………………………………

Pete Thomas delivers an unabashed , R & B tinged love letter…
this is meat and potatoes, served with a hot sauce.
Clive Davis (Sunday Times review of Mr Lucky)

Thomas plays an impressive growling saxophone
that has a humourous, teasing air of menace.
Mary Ellison (Jazz Express)

Thomas is a demonic player, abrasive and articulate.

Limetree Festival committed to being world’s first plastic-free festival

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011
Limetree Festival
26 – 28 August 2010
Lime Tree Farm, Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire
Yorkshire’s funkiest family friendly festival, Limetree in Grewelthorpe, in partnership with the not for profit organisation tapwater.org, take event sustainability to new heights. Limetree Festival will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world to be plastic free and have a working zero landfill policy.
Although Lime Tree is small in festival terms it would still be expected that up to 20,000 single use plastic bottles would be used during the three day event. Glastonbury, the largest event in the UK, used 20 articulated lorries full of plastic bottled water for the 2010 festival or 1,000,000 single use bottles.
tapwater.org will be organising drinking water from the festival’s own supply during the event for both visitors and artists, there will be no plastic bottled water on site.
Sean Birdsall, founder of the Limetree festival commented: “We are so pleased to be working towards a more sustainable festival with tapwater.org. As we are blessed with having our own water on site we have always encouraged our festival family to drink it which has the knock on effect of encouraging less rubbish and plastic waste. It is a challenge to minimise the use of disposable bottles and plates but with the help of tapwater.org we are moving towards a plastic free festival.”

At tapwater.org’s marquee festival-goers will be able to help themselves to still drinking water in glass jugs and garnished with lemon, lime or mint, all for free. There will also be economical stylish re-usable bottles available to purchase should they forget their own. The tapwater.org marquee is strategically placed in the centre of the festival and not hidden away in a corner of the site, showing a real commitment by the organisers to make sustainability work in a festival environment while also easing the burden on festival-goers’ pockets.

Says Michael Green, Director of Tapwater.org,  ”The aim of the Limetree Festival is to be zero landfill and plastic free, which fits perfectly with tapwater.org’s ethos. The invitation to provide water for the festival is a fantastic opportunity for us to promote the virtues of tap water and our scheme to an informed audience.”
Embracing music and culture with a great line up on five individual stages, each with their own agenda, the festival is diverse but all inclusive. The main Green Man stage hosts some of the bigger names including, and making their Limetree debuts, ethnic eletronica from Transglobal Underground; The Fantastics who have performed live on BBC sessions for Mark Lamarr and Craig Charles; Mercury and Brit award nominee jazz singer Carleen Anderson and merging the sounds of jazz, blues, folk, funk and pop Krystle Warren.
The full music programme is available here: www.limetreefestival.co.uk
It’s not all about the music at Limetree, although it plays a very major part: the festival takes places at Lime Tree Farm, a spiritual sanctuary at the edge of the Vale of York, complete with roundhouse and stone circle. For the first time this year there will a science area themed on the planets offering eight practical demonstrations and workshops for families during the day, and the chance to remember what the night sky looks like away from the glare of city lights with after dark telescope sessions accompanied by music.
Limetree is a family run festival and it has always been important to organisers Sean and Karen Birdsall, and their family, that children have as much to do and enjoy as the adults. The children’s area includes harp and guitar workshops, DJ taster sessions and for the littlest ones, ‘Weenyboppers’ with songs and games. A separate camping area this year allows families to relax when it comes to bedtime knowing they won’t be woken by late night stragglers and there is a growing programme of events and workshops for toddlers and teenagers.
Limetree Festival 2011 is supported by Welcome to Yorkshire and Lodge Environmental Solutions Ltd.

7. Tapwater.org is a not for profit organisation whose aim is to reduce plastic bottle waste in landfills by changing our attitudes to tap water. They have launched a scheme to make tap water more accessible on the high street. A tap water map highlights participating cafés, pubs and shops enabling people to locate free tap water refills using their mobile phone or the Internet. Although relatively new, the scheme is picking up pace and there are already over 700 tap water refilling stations.

In addition to the scheme, tapwater.org have designed a high quality, stylish, stainless steel re-useable bottle. The lifebottle has a unique and innovative cap and a twin wall vacuum construction, which keeps water cold for up to 20 hours.

All profits from the sales of the bottles will be used to; raise awareness of the damaging effects of bottled waters on our environment; expand our network of refilling stations; and provide mains fed water machines for educational establishments.

No More Sit-Ups, PT Greg Brookes’ Top 10 Core & Ab Exercises

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

12th June
Top 10 Core & Abs Exercises
Selecting the correct Core and Ab exercises doesn’t have to be difficult. The days of Sit-Ups and Crunches are over unless you want to destroy your posture and ruin your lower back. The Core and Abs need to be targeted in a scientific way, from all directions, and in a way they are designed to function. With all this in mind here are top PT Greg Brookes’ selection of top 10 Core and Ab exercises:

1. Slow Mountain Climbers

The core is primarily designed to prevent movement of the spine, this protects your spine from sudden movements or impacts that may threaten you. Slow Mountain Climbers place the spine in a stable position with gravity pushing down on it. By alternatively drawing the knees to the elbows you challenge your spines stability as well as activating the obliques.

2. Side Plank with Rotation

A lateral spinal stability drill but with an added movement. Like the slow mountain climbers the core works hard to prevent the spine from collapsing. By rotating and threading the arm underneath the body you challenge your spinal stability further and at the same time work your thoracic rotation. Limitations in the thoracic spine are responsible for issues in the lower back so this additional movement is an added bonus.

3. Cable Chop

The core can be attacked in four directions from the cable chop: top right to bottom left, top left to bottom right, bottom right to top left and bottom left to top right. Here the main objective is to prevent rotation of the spine. Reset the weight stack after each rep and learn to re-engage the core each time. It is interesting to note which of the 4 quadrants listed above you struggle with most and then progress this quadrant to balance out your core.

4. Roll Outs

Remember the old AB wheels, well they are back! Rolling out forwards with your hands on the wheel requires a huge amount of core strength and activation as the body tries extremely hard to avoid collapsing at the lower back. This can be a very hard exercise for the beginner but can be made easier by using a stability ball and starting from the knees.

5. Side Plank with Leg Raise

Similar principles to the “Side Plank with Rotation” above but this time you include some hip ABduction. For this exercise you stay in the side plank position and raise the top leg slowly. Avoid external rotation or opening of the hips, stay in line. This exercise is not only  intense on the lateral workings of the core but also strengthens the Glute Medius, an important muscle for hip stability and often weak in todays society.

6. Bird Dog with Rotation

A fundamental exercise that concentrates on the sling systems that connect shoulder to opposite hip. From all fours the opposite arm and leg are extended activating the back extensors. The elbow is then brought towards the knee and then extended out again. Notice how this movement pattern emulates our basic walking and running cross pattern. Strength in this pattern is paramount for general movement and function in daily life.

7. Dirty Dogs

A great number of the core muscles are designed to prevent the back from being over extended. Simple Up and Down Dogs as performed in Yoga will leave you with sore abs as your core works hard to prevent you from over extending your back in the Upwards Facing Dog position. You can take this traditional yoga movement and make it slightly more demanding by reaching back towards the opposite toe in the down dog position.

8. Push Ups

We are all familiar with the regular push up but did you know that they are a great core strengthener too? Push Ups are difficult for many people, not because they have weak upper body strength but because they have weak core strength. You can think of the push up as a moving plank. Clap Push Ups and Push Ups off a Swiss Ball just add more of a core challenge as the demand to stay rigid increases. Ever wondered why some guys can bench press hundreds of pounds but can’t do many push ups? Well now you know, strong chest but weak core!

9. Diaphragm Breathing

The Core and Abs can be divided into Inner and Outer. The Outer consists of all the famous muscles: 6 pack abs, obliques etc. The Inner core is what braces and provides a compression chamber to support the spine. No need to wear a weight lifters belt when you can strengthen your own inner corset and provide your own as nature intended. Simple deep diaphragm breathing from all fours drawing in the naval towards the spine on the Out breath and pushing it out on the In breath, will strengthen your inner corset and take inches off your waist.

10. Interval Sprints

Not only great for fat loss and cardiovascular conditioning but intensive on the core muscles too. Fast and explosive cross diagonal engagement of the core is as nature intended. You don’t have to sprint from a wild animal just try 5-8 sprints of 20-30 seconds resting until your heart rate comes back down to 60-75% of you max heart rate before repeating. Ensure you have a good level of Cardio health before trying this one!

These are my top core exercise recommendations. With the addition of a good clean nutrition plan, and a reduction in stress levels and you are well on your way to the body of your dreams.

See here for everything you need to know about personal training and exercise.
