How often do you finish an exercise class or workout without taking the time to stretch? And when you do stretch, how do you stretch and why? Greg Brookes, personal trainer to the trainers and fitness app developer, describes why it’s just as important to know why you stretch as how to stretch. Here are his Top 10 Things you Never Knew about Stretching (and probably never thought to ask!):

#1 – You’re Not Just Stretching Muscle

Every time you stretch you are not just hitting your muscles but other soft tissue too. Fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels and nerves also gets stretched. Lets also not forget the tendons that connect your muscles to your bones. So next time you think you are performing a quad stretch realise that so much more is being put under strain and you may not be targeting the muscle as much as you think you are.

#2 – Everything is Connected

Thomas Myers in his revolutionary book ”Anatomy Trains” describes how the body is comprised of connecting pathways of soft tissue. These pathways run through the entire body, some connecting soft tissue from head to toe. With the body interconnected in this way it turns localised stretching into globalised stretching. In other words, by stretching one section of the soft tissue pathway you are influencing other areas throughout that pathway. A simple example is how repeated wearing of high heel shoes shortens the Superficial Back Line (runs from the sole of the foot to the forehead up the back of the body) and can result in back pain and headaches.

#3 – Stretching De-Activates Muscles

The act of lengthening a muscle reduces the ability for that muscle to contract. This is a very useful theory that can be used to assist and activate other muscles. For example stretching the Hamstrings can assist in the firing of the Glutes if the firing pattern of the hip extensors is off. Stretching a muscle certainly will not render it useless but it will reduce its ability to contract.

#4 – We Should All Stretch Differently

We are all unique and have different length tensions throughout the body. There is no ”One size fits all” stretching program. Just like tuning a musical instrument we must only address the strings that need adjustment. It is important to understand your own body and then make adjustments accordingly.

#5 – Breathing Influences the Stretch

Deep breathing stimulates the Parasympathetic nervous system and this causes the body to relax. Mediation makes good use of this technique, as does Yoga which is fundamentally about ”The Breath”. When the body is relaxed it lets go of muscle tension. When you stretch you can use the breath to increase your stretching range of movement. As you slowly move into the stretch take a deep and long breath out and feel your tension release, do not fight it. As you breath in come out of the stretch slightly and then return into the stretch as you breath out again.

#6 – Stretching Can Be a Waste of Time

Stretching can be a waste of time if your body NEEDS to retain that tension for stabilisation rea- sons. A good example is the hamstrings being used to maintain core stability through pelvic alignment. No matter how many times you stretch the Hamstrings they will continue to ”Grip” the pelvis so long as your core stability is weak. The solution is to strengthen the core muscles that maintain pelvic alignment thus enabling the hamstrings to relax. If a muscle simply won’t lengthen then you must look at why it is being held under tension.

#7 – Stretching Can Cause Injury

Knots, Adhesion’s and Scar Tissue leave our soft tissue weak and vulnerable. Putting poor quality soft tissue under strain through stretching can cause further damage. Think about stretching an elastic band with a knot tied in the centre, the knot gets tighter and produces weak breaking points. Spending time addressing your soft tissue through massage and foam rolling will go a long way to improving it quality.

#8 – Stretching is NOT a Warm Up

Static stretching has it place at the beginning of a workout as part of a corrective exercise program but should not be thought of as a warm up. Mobilising the joints and dynamically taking the body through the movement patterns used in the forthcoming workout are far better ways to prepare the body for exercise. Stretching should be thought of as corrective and nothing more!

#9 – Better to Stretch Away From Exercise

Stretching can be done at anytime but stretching when the body is relaxed is the most effective time for correcting muscle tissue length. Stretching in the evening is best. If you try and change soft tissue length during your workout time the sympathetic nervous system is often active and the muscles finds it hard to relax. You can however perform maintenance stretching at this time.

#10 – Stretching is 3 Dimensional

We have over 600 muscles in the body and they all run in different directions. When you stretch you need to consider the angle of the muscles on stretch. For example you have 3 Hamstrings and by just internally or externally rotating the legs you can hit different muscles. If you find one stretch easy then try it from a different angle. You body will always chose the easiest path so look for the lines with restriction.

Virtual Piggy and WorldPay integrate to deliver an international youth payment solution

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Feb 20, 2012 Virtual Piggy, Inc. (OTCBB: VPIG), an innovator in safe youth payments, today announced the addition of WorldPay as a payment gateway partner.

Virtual Piggy allows parents to set up a monthly allowance for their children and promotes financial management while empowering under 18’s to make purchasing, saving and other money management decisions for themselves, within the boundaries setup by parents.

WorldPay is a major global leader in payment processing, handling an average of over 12 million transactions per day. WorldPay was the first UK bank to offer a full internet banking service and now operates in over 40 countries, making it one of Europe’s largest payment service providers. The company offers services across the entire payment value chain, including transaction capturing, merchant acquiring and transaction processing.

Only weeks after announcing that they had signed a Joint Marketing Agreement, Virtual Piggy and WorldPay have completed the integration of their solutions. Virtual Piggy is also already integrated with leading commercial eCommerce platforms such as Magento from eBay, DemandWare and osCommerce. The addition of the WorldPay, with its 200 alternative payment mechanisms as a new standard payment gateway facilitates the global expansion of Virtual Piggy, especially into regions where the use of credit cards is not as ubiquitous as it is in the US and the UK.

David Drever, VP Global Partnerships for WorldPay explained, “Like many other organizations in the payment sector we had been tracking the dynamic growth of Virtual Piggy. We are delighted that both our organizations will be able to offer each other’s products to our existing and future customers as a simple plugin solution.”

“WorldPay has the enviable position as a market leader in alternative payment options,” said Joe Peden, General Manager of Virtual Piggy EMEA. “We already have customers in the UK for whom WorldPay will be their preferred payment option. As we expand our European operations our WorldPay integration will be deployed in even more merchant eCommerce stores and games.”

Digital Stores to Integrate Virtual Piggy into eCommerce Framework

LONDON, UK – 11th Feb 2012 Virtual Piggy, Inc. (OTCBB: VPIG), an innovator in safe youth payments, today announced that it will provide its youth-friendly payment system to Digital Stores.

Virtual Piggy allows parents to set up a monthly allowance for their children and promotes financial management while empowering youth under 21 to make purchasing, saving and other money management decisions for themselves, within the boundaries setup by parents.

Digital Stores provides eCommerce services for EMI and Universal Music Group and are the UK’s leading direct-to-fan ecommerce site for artists, labels and brands. Digital Stores operates over 60 ecommerce stores including the official global ecommerce site for One Direction, the official music store for Kylie and the official European store for the Beatles

“Online eCommerce is, as we all know, impacting classical high street stores, as we have already seen several times this year. However, unless online merchants can successfully tap into the youth market, eCommerce could actually exclude young consumers. For Digital Stores, this is a major consumer group”, said Russel Coultart, Chief Executive of Digital Stores. “Virtual Piggy offers us a complete solution to youth monetization, and we are very excited to integrate their technology.”

“Digital Stores provide the online stores and eCommerce for so many fantastic youth-orientated brands including Aardman productions, Hit Entertainment and artists such as Kylie, One Direction and Emeli Sandé, “ said Joe Peden, General Manager EMEA of Virtual Piggy. “They are a perfect partner for Virtual Piggy as we expand our business into Europe.”

Since its launch, Virtual Piggy has signed up a number of impressive partners in the US who have integrated Virtual Piggy into their eCommerce platforms. These include K’Nex, O’Neill, Claire’s Accessories, amongst others. Even before opening in London, Virtual Piggy has signed multiple clients across Europe and the UK, such has been the demand for their youth payment solution.

Virtual Piggy provides rapid and safe mobile and online transaction capability, allowing merchants to monetise the youth market. Virtual Piggy is integrated with leading commercial eCommerce platforms such as Oracle ATG, Magento from eBay, DemandWare and osCommerce. All major payment gateways including ChasePaymentech, PayVision and WorldPay are supported by the platform and Virtual Piggy’s strategic partnership with PayPal enables adults with PayPal accounts to be able to register at Virtual Piggy with a single click.

General Manager for Virtual Piggy EMEA, Joe Peden has already added renowned industry expert, Rob Stevenson as UK Country Manager.

“Europe in the past few years has grown to one of the largest gaming markets in the world. Many youth orientated and entertainment companies have their European headquarters in London. The European online market is simply huge. In the UK the average online spend is 25% of the gross household income and yet without Virtual Piggy under 18’s have no easy way to make online purchases in games or from websites”, said Peden. “Online may be crushing the high street but merchants need to ensure that shopping on line is open to all. Virtual Piggy facilitates this for the unbanked and credit cardless youth market”

18th December, London. To kick off the global foundation CHANT on 21.12.2012, Internationally renowned music producer and remixer YOUTH (U2,The Verve, Primal Scream, Bloody Beetroots, McCartney etc.) and Alex Paterson from legendary Ambient house titans “The Orb” have remixed their Top 10 UK Hit, Little Fluffy Clouds for FREE download at www.globalchant.com. The song has been re-recorded and remixed with voices recorded at the recent United Nations climate talks (COP18) in Doha by CHANT co-founder Daniel Morrell, the creator of the term ‘carbon neutral.’ A group of volunteers from more than 60 countries including Venezuela, Ecuador, Canada, the United States and Suriname chanted together to form a new musical bed to the song.

The entire human family will be engaged in the search for the lost chord of harmony with nature.

This ambitious musical project requires people from around the world to choose a cause, listen to the note representing the cause, and record onto their phone. They then upload onto the CHANT website. This eventually would become part of a huge global mashup containing many millions of voices which, according to legend may reveal the mythical ‘Lost Chord.” Youth and Dan have initiated the quest to find this “lost chord.”

They will produce beautiful and harmonious epic mashups and distribute them , to raise money and awareness for projects for global charities. CHANT’s hope is that other artists will pick up on this idea and weave the CHANT material into their own music, which then can be used to raise funds for the causes that people chanted for.

Each cause has a color and each color corresponds to a musical note.

Starting this Friday 21st December cornerstone events will be taking place in seven continents to highlight the seven key causes that CHANT has identified and will be supporting throughout 2013 and beyond. The 21st of December is the culmination of a twenty-six thousand year cycle and the beginning of a fresh, new epoch. Says YOUTH, “It is the simplicity of this idea that makes it so beautiful to work with. The human voice is a powerful manna medicine for the world right now. Chanting creates magic, community and enchantment. Every voice counts, and when sung together with thousands of other voices from all over the world, when it is focused on creating a sustainable future…..anything is possible!”

An Amazonian musician, composer and poet in Manaus will lead a shamanic flash mob at the mouth of the Amazon; children will be CHANTing on the beach in the Maldives; an oceanside CHANT will take place in California; there will be forest CHANTing in woodland in Japan and CHANTing in a village in the Indian Himalayas; a CHANT at Stonehenge in the UK; and a chant in Byron Bay in Australia and finally 2 events are in planning in Kenya and Antarctica. CHANT encourages individuals, friends, families and others to get involved in the world’s first global choir. Your voice is uploaded to our server as a vocal signature. The note you chant will be gifted to musicians who will make beautiful music with this, and the sale will generate funds for the cause that you chanted for. CHANT will update you on your cause as it evolves.

www.globalchant.com <http://www.globalchant.com>

Join in with the CHANT global party this Friday, 21 December, by choosing a cause and chanting the note into your cellphone. Simply upload it to the CHANT server. This is a particularly powerful moment to give your voice as we enter into a new epoch. So please join us at 21:21PM this Friday.

Little Ones Can Receive Personalized Video Messages and Phone Calls from Santa, Now Direct to Computers, Smartphones and Tablets

Montreal, Quebec – November 26, 2012 – Portable North Pole is back for its fifth year, offering a FREE, fun and fully personalized experience for Santa fans young and old, all across the globe.

With Portable North Pole, kids and adults alike can experience the magic of Santa and his village at the touch of a button via their personal computers or mobile devices. To celebrate Christmas, and birthdays, users can send their loved ones personalized video messages from Santa himself, featuring personal photos and other customized details.

This year, Portable North Pole has pledged to donate five percent of all personalized product sales to participating Children’s Hospital foundations in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Canada and France, as part of the PNP Children’s Hospital program.

The never-before-seen 2012 videos include brand new scenes from Santa’s village, funny new elf clips and more. The basic PNP video is completely free to stream for an unlimited number of times during the holidays. And for a small fee, users can create an extended five-minute premium version, which includes exclusive clips of Santa riding on his sleigh, a personalized Christmas Carol sung by the elves and more.

“The Portable North Pole console has streamed over 60 million fully-personalized videos since it was launched in 2008,” said Alexandre Bérard, president of UGroupMedia and designer of Portable North Pole. “Users just have to answer a few questions, provide photos, and Santa Claus will prepare a unique free video message for each of their loved ones.”

New for 2012, Portable North Pole is offering an extra special treat for kids: a personalized phone call from Santa himself! Another new and unique gift option is an augmented reality interactive letter, sealed with a little sprinkling of magic by the elves to prove that it was sent directly from Santa’s post office! The full-color letter includes a premium video and a facial scan feature, which Santa uses to check if the child is on his nice list.

Also new for 2012, Portable North Pole is excited to introduce its updated iPNP mobile and tablet app, which includes the premium video, interactive advent calendar and phone calls from Santa. In December 2011, the Portable North Pole app was among the top 10 paid downloads on the Apple Store in the UK.

Santa’s e-shop on the Portable North Pole website is also stocked with a range of new personalized gifts, from letters, coloring books and place mats, to books, puzzles and official “Santa’s Nice List” certificates.

About Portable North Pole and UGroupMedia

UGroupMedia (UGM) is a Montreal-based company specializing in the development and deployment of innovative solutions for customized transmedia experiences. Through its patent- pending platform named “U”, UGroupMedia made its mark in the field of multi-platform innovation with the launch of its first production, the Portable North Pole (PNP) console.

A secret among women who love skirts, West Hampstead based Nicola Quilter has been producing her quirky, beautifully embroidered skirts for the past decade. Selling to women around the globe, many of whom own upwards of a dozen or more of her designs, she has expanded from a small stall in Camden to a successful online business and outlets in Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands as well as Greenwich and Spitalfields markets in London.

Born in the UK but brought up in Australia, Nicola came back to this country in 1995 to pursue a recording contract after a highly successful acting career back home that culminated with a lead role in Aussie soap opera Home & Away. Alongside recording and gigging, she took a stall in Camden Market selling customised jeans, putting her year at Sydney’s College of Fashion and Textiles to good use.

The skirts came later and in response to what Nicola saw as a niche in the market for affordable, wearable, original designs that could be changed seasonally without the need to change the essential shape. Manufactured in stretchable cotton, each skirt design features a different embroidery pattern designed by Nicola with the most popular patterns coming back season after season. Not your usual embroidery, Nicola draws her inspiration from the world around her favouring the use of flowers, cityscapes, even brightly coloured Polo mints and telegraph wires!

Her customers are loyal to the point of obsessive. One said, “I am loving my 5 Nicola Quilter original skirts… but I need more! Every time I wear my skirts I get comments from people. Every time! People I don’t even know ask me about them. I direct people to your website, but maybe I should get some of your cards to give out!”

30th October 2012. Travelling with children is about to get easier as Steady Eddie takes to the road with a new Kids Club from the Stobart Group.

Keeping a child or children occupied during a long road trip has always presented parents with challenges. Constant cries of ‘Are we there yet?’ coupled with the need for frequent bathroom and eating stops usually increases the tension in the vehicle. Fortunately, help is at hand. The familiar ‘Spot the Stobart Lorry’ game, well known to most children (and adults) for years is about to be updated for the 21st century as an interactive app (released December 2012) along with a Kids Club and website called Steady Eddie World featuring travel-related games and books for children aged 4-9 years. Steady Eddie World contains premium content for members including: online games, downloadable puzzles, recipes and videos introducing Steady Eddie and his friends! Stobart take education seriously which is why lesson plans in literacy and numeracy, using the Steady Eddie characters, have been devised and are available for download on Steady Eddie World. Together, Stobart’s aim is to make a family’s journey as exciting as arriving at their destination, by invigorating traditional travel games into a form that today’s young person can appreciate and enjoy.

Whilst some may remember an early incarnation of Steady Eddie as an anthropomorphised lorry, Stobart have rebooted Eddie for the 21st century ‘little traveller’ as something more recognisable – a boy. Ably assisted by his sidekick Tina Towers, Eddie runs Steady Eddie Enterprises (SEE) World Inc. from Greenville…UK. He maintains a close relationship with his fleet of lorries, as they do their best to outfox the nefarious Tycoon Terry – Managing Director of Horrid Haulage.

The app (to be released Dec 2012) – called The Eddie Stobart Tracker – will activate an alarm when a Stobart lorry is coming within range and will be displayed on a real-time map. Once the truck has been spotted the child can enter their sighting onto their account and compare their tally with other ‘tiny travellers’ via the leader board. This new interactive element will create a community of tiny travellers that will entertain themselves – thus relieving the burden from long suffering parents!

Steady Eddie embodies great values of practicality, fun and fair-mindedness with his one fear being he hates to let people down – a great role model for children.

The travel games and associated merchandise are available from Steady Eddie World including Steady Eddie caps, puzzle, sticker books and more. The ‘Spot the Stobart Lorry’ game – available on the iTunes store from December 2012 and via Steady Eddie World will keep children entertained through long (or short) car journeys. The experience can be more interactive and immersive as there is now a whole ‘Steady Eddie World’ website for kids to get into.

The Steady Eddie club membership costs £15.99 and members receive copies of the fanzine 3 times a year, along with a goodie bag. The items are mail order and the numbers are already climbing as Steady Eddie takes to the road again!

Following transmission of Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers on Channel 5 in 2010,the membership grew from 7,000 to almost 20,000 members with a projected turnoverof £1m. In 2011, along with her father, she helped organise the first StobartFest, a free event for fans that allowed them to see all the lorries that form part of the Stobart fleet and to meet the drivers, as well as other Stobart fans. The most recent event, held in May at the Manchester City Etihad Stadium, attracted over 15k visitors. Along with the fan club, Laura is particularly proud of helping to develop the new Southend Airport, acquired by the Stobart Group in 2009.

She was responsible for developing the First Class Lounge, Stobart Airport Shopping and the airport’s bar. The work involved everything from buying to staffing, sourcing to hiring contractors.
